OK, now what???

So I have a blog....what do I do now??? A brief explanation to start with....

I've been researching my genealogy seriously for about two years now. It all started with a class on Genealogy Librarianship that I took while getting my MLS from the University of South Florida. I've made several research trips, one to the National Archives, two to the Georgia Archives and several to the John F. Germany Library in Tampa and the Polk County Historical and Genealogical Library in Bartow, Florida.

The results from all this travelling? Well...I did find out least one fact per trip, so I mark the trips as successful, but I'm not satisfied. I want more! I want to find out more than just one thing at a time. Sure, I make a research plan and check the catalog before I leave home, but no matter how thoroughly I prepare, inevitably I find out about a great book afterwards.

I think part of the reason that I want more is because I feel ignorant about American history. You see, I went to elementary school in Canada. So I didn't learn a whole lot of American history as a child. The extent of my education in American history has been one class in high school and one class in college and tons of historical novels.

I figure that if I learn more about American history in general and the local history of the area I'm researching, I'll be a better researcher and my trips will yield more than one fact at a time. So I'm going to start seriously researching history, starting with North Georgia. You see, my 3rd great-grandfather came down from North Carolina into Georgia some time after 1802 and my grandmother left Georgia for Ohio some time before 1917. So my ancestors were in the same spot for 115 years...or were they? That same ggggrandfather is shown as living in four different counties on four succeeding censuses. So did the county line move or did my ancestor?

I'm getting a bit off-topic, though. This isn't going to be a blog about county formation in the Roswell/Alpharetta area north of Atlanta, Georgia; although I'm sure that topic is going to come up. What it is going to be about is the somewhat abridged history of an area for a particular time. There will be references for genealogists who want to know more about the time and place, as well as what genealogical records may (or may not) be available and where to go to find those records. And always, I will tell you where I found the information so that you can go look it up for yourself.

So that's the plan. Comments, anyone?
